(1) What is Reiki?
Pronounced ‘ray-key’, Reiki is one form of energy healing. This method has been used for centuries in various forms. It re-emerged in Japan in the late 1800’s and involves the transfer of 'universal energy' via non-invasive, non- manipulative, gentle touch and encourages physical or emotional healing.
(2) Key points about Reiki:
-
works together with all other medical and therapeutic techniques
-
it involves the transfer of energy from the practitioner’s palms to their recipient
-
physical as well as emotional states respond well to Reiki therapy
-
aims to increase energy levels and promote relaxation and wellbeing
(3) What can I expect in a Reiki session?
In general, a Reiki session will involve:
-
a brief, completely confidential outline of your health & records are stored securely
-
you will be asked to lie on a Reiki table or, sit in a chair – if that is more comfortable
-
an initial session will be about 90 mins; a follow-up session takes approx. 60 mins
-
the practitioner places their hands on or just above your body in sequences of positions
-
unlike massage, a Reiki session does not involve any form of physical manipulation
-
you remain fully clothed throughout the treatment (except shoes, glasses etc are removed for comfort
-
during a session, you may feel warmth or a tingling sensation or, you may feel absolutely nothing
(4) Will the Reiki practitioner’s hands touch me in any way?
Reiki is usually given with a light, gentle pressure in direct contact with your body. There are standard areas of
hand placements that avoid all sensitive body parts.
*I will show you the hand positions on a chart before we start the session. Key areas are: the abdomen, head, face,
ears and back but only includes limbs or other areas if there is need (e.g. an arm if there has been injury).
If you have any issues with direct touch, instead my hands will hover a few centimetres above the standard areas of placement of the body - mentioned above. Otherwise, my hands are usually in “direct contact” with some exceptions such as: breasts, private body parts or skin burns. Reiki is all about enhancing your comfort & wellbeing, not distressing you!
(5) What does Reiki treatment feel like?
Where my hands are placed, you may feel a slight tingling, heat, energy or nothing at all. The sensations or lack of are not a barometer of the Reiki, they are just how your body senses energy. Rarely, a client might experience a short intensification of their symptoms. More likely you might feel peace and calm in your mind or physically in general. It is different for all clients but deep relaxation is almost always felt.
